InvestFlow — designing an investment crowdfunding platform from scratch

Designing an MVP for investment crowdfunding — from investor journeys and fundraiser workflows to the internal platform used to run the system behind them.

Three InvestFlow windows overlapping: an investor portfolio with its holdings, a fundraiser dashboard, and the back-office investments table

Context

InvestFlow is a crowdfunding platform connecting investors with opportunities to invest in real estate and other assets, and fundraisers raising capital for those opportunities. The project was built from scratch as an MVP, with three distinct user experiences connected to the same underlying platform:

  • Investor — a web and mobile experience for discovering investment opportunities, making investments, and tracking their portfolio.
  • Fundraiser — a web platform for creating and managing investment opportunities and monitoring their performance.
  • Back-office — an internal platform for managing investments, transactions, approvals, and day-to-day operations.

As the sole designer, I worked across all three experiences — turning product requirements into user flows, information structures, and final interfaces across web and mobile.

Problem

InvestFlow had to serve three distinct clients — investors, fundraisers, and internal team — each with their own workflows and requirements. The product needed to support a large number of interconnected flows while keeping the experience clear and consistent across the ecosystem.

Goal

Design the three products from scratch, translating complex requirements into clear user flows and interfaces across web and mobile.

Approach

How the problem was solved

Before designing individual screens, I mapped the main journeys for each user role and the relationships between them. The same investment opportunity can move through several parts of the system: a fundraiser creates it, platform staff reviews and manages it, and an investor discovers and invests in it.

The blueprint helped connect user-facing flows with the operational processes happening behind them and gave me a framework for designing the different parts of the platform consistently.

Service Blueprint: investor, fundraiser and platform-staff journeys in rows, split by lines of interaction and visibility, with the supporting systems beneath each step

01.

Investor

The investor experience combines discovery, financial evaluation, investment, and portfolio management across web and mobile.

Five phone screens: personal details, phone confirmation with a verification code, and questionnaire steps about annual income and current investments
Sign up & financial questionnaire — a multi-step registration and questionnaire flow guiding investors through account creation and the information required to get started with the platform, designed across web and mobile.
The offering details page: funding progress, expected return, unit price and risk level beside the description of the property
Understanding the offering — the offering details page brings together the key information investors need to understand an investment opportunity and make an informed decision.
Making an investment — the investment flow takes users from selecting the number of units they want to purchase and reviewing the associated fees through to submission and portfolio tracking. The flow also connects the investment action with the return schedule and resulting portfolio state, keeping the experience consistent from transaction to follow-up.
02.

Fundraiser

The fundraiser experience focuses on creating and managing investment opportunities and monitoring the investments they receive.

Two windows: a dashboard with funds raised, dividends paid and the latest investments, and an offering page with its investment table
Managing an offering — the fundraiser experience covers the full lifecycle of an investment opportunity — from creating and submitting a new offering to managing it after publication.
Adding an opportunity — a walkthrough of creating and publishing a new investment offering.
03.

Platform staff

The internal platform supports the operational side of the investment ecosystem — including approvals, transactions, investments, and distributions.

Back-office table of investments across offerings, with selection checkboxes, statuses and export controls
Investments management — the back-office view of all investments across offerings, including bulk confirmation and generating certificates of contribution for investors.
A submitted dividend distribution under review: payout totals with a per-investor breakdown, and approve or decline actions
Dividend payout — staff review a submitted dividend distribution, with payout totals and a per-investor breakdown, before approving or declining it.

Conclusion

This project pushed me to design for structure, not just for screens. With three roles sharing one underlying system, every interface decision had ripple effects elsewhere, so understanding the full flow had to come before designing any individual piece.

I came away with a clearer sense of how to make complex, high-stakes financial processes feel simple and trustworthy, without hiding the complexity that actually matters to the people using them.
